Super-Resolution Imaging

Super-resolution imaging includes advanced microscopy techniques that overcome the diffraction limit of conventional light microscopy. While standard optical microscopes typically cannot distinguish structures closer than approximately 200 nm, super-resolution methods reveal much finer cellular and molecular details.

The technology combines controlled illumination, sensitive image detection and computational reconstruction. In Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM), for example, the sample is illuminated with precisely defined light patterns. Multiple images are recorded and processed using advanced algorithms to reconstruct a final image with significantly improved resolution. Depending on the imaging method, researchers can select between higher spatial resolution, faster acquisition, greater imaging depth or lower phototoxicity.

Super-resolution imaging enables detailed observation of organelles, proteins and molecular interactions that cannot be clearly resolved using conventional microscopy. It is particularly valuable for studying dynamic processes in living cells, including organelle interactions, membrane activity, cell division and intracellular transport. Low-light imaging conditions also help reduce photobleaching and phototoxicity, supporting longer observation of living samples.

Altium offers CSR Biotech’s advanced super-resolution imaging solutions, combining high-resolution microscopy, intelligent image processing and flexible imaging modes for a wide range of life science applications.
